About

One Aruba landmark to add to your itinerary is the Alto Vista Chapel in Noord.

Built in 1750, Alto Vista was the first Catholic church in Aruba. Its spiritual legacy reflects the island's colonial history and spiritual heritage. Even if you aren't interested in the chapel's spiritual legacy, it is still worth visiting. The ocean views on its knoll are breathtaking and will appeal to photographers and nature lovers.

Located east of Noord, the chapel is close to other Aruba landmarks. The Bushiribana Ruins are a historical site built during the island's gold milling era in 1824. Further south of both iconic destinations is Conchi Natural Pool, which is part of the Arikok National Park. Both landmarks are best accessible by 4x4 vehicles or tours like ABC Tours Aruba.

The church's distinctive yellow facade and terracotta tiled roof stand out against the backdrop of the azure sky. The architecture is simple, featuring rustic stonework, shuttered windows, and a modest steeple. The building's simple lines and colors harmonize with Aruba's vivid blue waters and sky. The result is a concert of human creativity with nature's vastness, offering serenity and wonder to all who visit.

The exterior's simple design manifests itself inside. Here, simple wooden benches serve as pews and clear glass replaces the stained windows associated with most churches.

The checkerboard tile floor and stained wood ceiling usher the visitor's eyes toward the altar. Again, the design isn't ornate yet beautiful in its modesty. The altar's sky-blue wall is home to religious memorabilia, artifacts, and Biblical figures. The quaint setting is peaceful and a delight for the senses.

Visiting the Alto Vista Chapel is like stepping into the past. It lets sojourners and the curious connect with the stories of former parishioners.

While each offers a different level of challenge, all offer unobstructed views of Aruba's north coast,cactus-studded hills, rocky cliffs, and hidden coves.

Caminda di Cruz is a celebrated annual event at Alto Vista Chapel on Good Friday. Local Catholics walk from Oranjestad to the chapel in preparation for Easter.

While the chapel is a beacon for those of the Christian faith, the church is open to all. The peace labyrinth is a winding path surrounded by calming scenery, providing an opportunity to meditate and unwind. It offers a holistic experience that nurtures the spirit and the mind. Many liken it to a zen garden.
