About

Before the invention of the automobile, the only way to get around Aruba was by donkey. When cars became popular, donkeys were no longer needed. So where did these gentle creatures end up? Many found a home at the Donkey Sanctuary Aruba.

As modern vehicles took precedence, the donkey's roles diminished, and their population faced numerous challenges. In the 70s, a rapidly spreading illness reduced the donkey population to twenty.

Recognizing the urgency of protecting these gentle mammals, the Donkey Sanctuary Aruba was established in 1997. It is a non-profit refuge with volunteer staff that symbolizes Aruba's commitment to animal welfare and conservation.

Today, Donkey Sanctuary Aruba provides a safe home for these donkeys and serves as an educational center. Visitors learn about the significant contributions donkeys have made to the island and the importance of animal conservation.

There are approximately 130 donkeys on site who roam the sprawling acres and are available for personal encounters. Donkey Sanctuary Aruba ensures that these animals live out their lives in peace, are cared for, and are protected. Be sure to add a visit to your Aruba vacation. Your donation will help preserve these animals while enriching your experience on the island.

Donkey Sanctuary Aruba: Fun Facts & Cool Features

The Donkey Sanctuary Aruba is more than an animal sanctuary; it's where visitors can get up close and personal with these affectionate creatures.

One of the coolest features is the opportunity to adopt a donkey symbolically. This initiative helps fund the sanctuary's efforts while allowing visitors to form a special bond with their adopted animal. Adoption costs around $200 annually, ensuring that one donkey receives appropriate care and well-being.

Another fascinating aspect is the donkey interaction area, where visitors can feed, pet, and hug the donkeys, forging unforgettable memories. Additionally, the sanctuary operates entirely on solar power, showcasing its commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation.

With its proximity to Arikok National Park, a visit to Donkey Sanctuary Aruba makes combining multiple activities, like visiting Conchi Natural Pool, easy-peasy.

Walking through this sanctuary, one can't help but feel a sense of peace, knowing the donkeys are protected and loved. Whether an animal lover, a history enthusiast, or seeking a family-friendly activity, the Donkey Sanctuary is a must-visit. It will enrich your Aruba vacation with its warmth, history, and the gentle spirits of its inhabitants.
