About

Like many business ventures, Russ and Carol Kiessig's desire began with a dream: to share the ocean's wonders with all. Their vision became a reality when they opened the Port San Luis Marina Institute in 1994, which has evolved into the Central Coast Aquarium.

In the beginning, Russ spoke on the pier about marine life, but later, on the second floor of The Olde Port Inn. Soon, this became obsolete, and Russ and Carol knew they needed a facility. But who would pay for the expensive project?

As fate would have it, Avila Beach received compensation from Union Oil/Unocal for an underground oil contamination and could begin construction. Sadly, Russ passed away in 2005 before the aquarium was completed.

In 2010, Port San Luis Marina Institute transformed into the Central Coast Aquarium, offering hands-on exhibits to inspire a love for marine life and an understanding of coastal ecosystems. With its proximity to other area attractions like Avila Valley Barn, visiting several iconic landmarks in a day is doable.

This iconic aquarium houses diverse marine species from coastal waters like starfish, crabs, swell sharks, and occasionally the Giant Pacific Octopus. It also continues to be a pivotal part of educating young and old about the importance of marine biology. The aquarium has over 16,000 visitors and 4,500 school children yearly, further continuing Russ Kiessig's mission of fostering understanding and appreciation for oceanic life.

When seeking a hands-on adventure suitable for young and old, visit the Central Coast Aquarium.
