About

While its name is a head-scratcher (which we'll explain shortly!) Automatic Seafood & Oysters (ASO) offers fine dining in a relaxing environment.

Established in 2019 by celebrated chef Adam Evans and designer Suzanne Humphries Evans, it has become a Birmingham landmark. The menu is rich with Gulf and East Coast seafood and doesn't try to overwhelm you with options. Instead, it showcases Chef Evans' creative touch, transforming each into a culinary wonder.

Speaking of creative touch, the decor at ASO reflects Suzanne's vision of space. It is comfortable, elegant, and classic, making the eatery ideal for a romantic rendezvous or with the family after exploring McWane Science Center.

Regarding its name, it's a tip of the hat to the building's former tenant, the Automatic Sprinkler Corporation. Rest assured that there is nothing automatic about this restaurant's cuisine, service, or vibe.

Vibe

The revamped industrial building sports a white facade accented by large floor-to-ceiling windows. Striped awnings add a European touch amidst the glow from the wall sconces.

What catches the eye is the neon, Gulf-water-blue "Automatic" sign over the entrance. The 1950s-style font honors the building's former owners, while its blue hues beckon guests to explore the visionary cuisine within.

Inside, the exposed ceiling represents the building's industrial past, with old-style lights dangling throughout the room. The concrete flooring is another reminder of its bygone era and subtly connects diners with the interior's stylishness.

Touches of elegance enhance the atmosphere, like the matching wallpaper, booths, and curtains in one dining room area. Following suit are the wood tables with a mini candle that create warmth and intimacy.

The atmosphere will appeal to families and those seeking a date night with the various dining areas. Choose the stunning bar for a casual experience or the wallpapered dining area for an intimate occasion. The covered patio adds yet another dining dynamic, ideal after a day exploring Kelly Ingram Park.

Automatic Seafood & Oysters: Menu & Drinks

The menu is a seafood lover's guide to Gulf and East Coast delicacies. And because it is à la carte, diners have the freedom to craft a meal suitable for their budget and appetite. Keep in mind that because ASO sources fresh seafood, the menu changes daily.

The raw bar bursts with briny goodness from Florida, North Carolina, Maine, and Canada. Whether you opt for oysters on the half shell or the Gulf Pompano Ceviche, something is appealing to various tastes.

The various starters are ideal for kickstarting your dinner or can be combined for a lighter meal. The yeast rolls with Eastaboga honey butter will melt in your mouth, while the smoked fish dip and octopus ala plancha elevate the experience. Toss in the Gulf shrimp with crispy grits and the crispy pork belly with Korean BBQ, and it's easy to understand why some make the appetizers a meal!

The seafood and land-lover entrees will have your taste buds singing! The roasted, speared American red snapper, one of the Gulf's tastiest fish, is a simple dish where lemon and subtle spices enhance the flavors.

The grilled black grouper is another crowd-pleaser with marinated spring vegetables and crispy ham. This fish entree is the perfect finish to a day exploring the vendors at The Market at Pepper Place.

For those who don't like fish, the Not Seafood section of the menu has plenty to select from. These include roasted chicken breast, a bone-in pork chop, NY strip steak, and grilled beets for vegetarians or those needing a lighter dinner.

Save room for dessert! With plenty to peruse, like the key lime pie and strawberry basil cobbler, those with a sweet tooth will discover paradise!

With a full bar, the craft cocktails, wines, and beers will pair with anything on the menu.

Dining at Automatic Seafood & Oysters offers a culinary retreat on your Birmingham vacation. Pairing premium seafood with impeccable service and ambiance creates an unforgettable occasion.
