About

Meat-and-three lunch spots are as much a Southern tradition as sweet iced tea. These ma and pa diners offer meats of the day with your choice of three homemade sides. While Birmingham has its share of these eateries, only Johnny's Restaurant in Homewood can boast of serving "Greek and Three."

Now, you're probably wondering how a place with an American name, "Johnny's," has ties to Greece. The answer goes back to 1921 when current chef Timothy Hontzas's grandfather, Johnny Hontzopolous, migrated to New Orleans.

With only $17 in his pocket, Johnny combined his passion for his homeland's food with grit and determination and, in time, opened his first restaurant in Mississippi.

Chef Tim opened Johnny's Restaurant in 2012, using his Greek heritage and passion for food, which had been passed down through the generations.

Here, you will discover classic meat-and-three dishes and Greek specialties like spanakopita, souvlaki, Rolo Kima (Greek lamb meatloaf), and homemade Yiaourti cheesecake.

Aside from Chef Tim's passion, the driving philosophy of the eatery comes from his Papua who said, "We prepare food for the body, but Good Food to feed the Soul."

The restaurant's Homewood location puts it close to Alabama landmarks to explore, like Vulcan Park and Museum and Red Mountain Park. Such convenience makes planning a meal around a hike or museum trip easy.

Having lunch at Johnny's is a rite of passage when visiting Birmingham. You'll savor Southern meat-and-three staples and mouth-watering Greek cuisine.

Vibe

Johnny's in an upscale strip mall in Homewood, and its vivid red signage is easy to spot. The facade blends with the other businesses to create a uniform yet unique look. Think chic meets urban shopping.

The decor resembles a classic meat-and-three, with simple tables and chairs, a chalkboard wall menu, quaint signs, and memorabilia. Best of all, it has an unpretentious atmosphere.

The homey touch fosters a festive vibe, where families, vacationers, and locals unite for good food and good times. The wholesome food and relaxing atmosphere make it the perfect choice after playing golf at any RTJ Golf Trail course.

With its easy-going ambiance and flavorful menu, Johnny's Restaurant is an ideal spot for anyone exploring Birmingham.
