About

Yo' Mama's in Birmingham's Fourth Avenue Historic District offers a welcoming atmosphere and mouth-watering Southern comfort food. But there's more to this made-from-scratch hotspot than what is on the menu.

What's impressive is that this eatery is one of the few Black-owned, sit-down spots in the historic Black Business Districts.

But before it became an iconic restaurant in a 5,000-square-foot facility, it grew from humble roots. The genesis was in 2007 when it was known as Jazzy Fish & Chicken at the Seabreeze Jazz Festival in Florida. For years, this vendor became the hottest-selling vendor at the festival, which piqued Denise Peterson's interest.

With her family and a vow to give the business venture three years, she came out of retirement. In 2014, and with a name change, Yo' Mama's opened on 2nd Avenue.

A decade later, with a satisfied fan base, the eatery has become one of Magic City's top restaurants. It moved into its current spot in 2025, going from being able to seat 40 customers to handling 100.

While reviewers equate the restaurant to soul food, Denise quickly clarifies that they serve "good food for the soul."While this may include some soul food staples, you'll also find Creole-inspired dishes, fish tacos, and its pièce de résistance, chicken and waffles! More on this treat later!

The restaurant is near key Birmingham landmarks like the Civil Rights District, the Birmingham Museum of Art, and the Alabama Theatre. Such convenience makes combining a sightseeing adventure with homemade food easy to plan.

Yo' Mama's offers made-from-scratch, soul-satisfying fare that is a must when in Iron City!

Vibe

The eatery is easy to find as it is on the ground level of BPA Parking Deck 3. The brick facade and large windows of the restaurant are inviting. On sunny days, dining on the sidewalk out front is perfect for enjoying downtown Birmingham.

The interior showcases a vaulted ceiling with industrial elements like exposed brick walls. Contemporary features like suspended black trellis and flatscreen TVs connect modern features with vintage aesthetics.

Wooden tables and chairs are complemented by quirky artwork, celebrating local culture and comfort. The decor strikes the perfect balance of welcoming and stylish.

The dining areas can accommodate groups of all sizes. Grab a cozy table for two or larger seating arrangements for family gatherings.

The welcoming ambiance and ample space are ideal for relaxing after a morning hike at Red Mountain Park or on a working lunch.

The homey, vibrant vibes at Yo' Mama's ensure that every meal feels like a special occasion.

Yo' Mama's: Menu & Drinks

At the heart of the team at this eatery is inclusiveness, which is why all items are gluten-free or have gluten-free options except Meals of the Day.

Speaking of Meals of the Day, these rotate to feature local and fresh ingredients. Tuesday often showcases fried pork chops with mac & cheese, collard greens, and gluten-free cornbread.

As promised, let's explore the chicken and waffles in more detail. This tasty meal features a Belgian-style waffle with homemade syrup and four savory chicken wings. Add seasonal berries and whipped cream, and you have a meal and dessert in one!

Another crowd favorite is the shrimp and grits. This Southern classic showcases creamy, cheesy grits with succulent shrimp, spicy sausage, bell peppers, and onions. It's the perfect meal after playing golf at any RTJ Golf Trail course.

The fish tacos are delicious and feature fried or grilled tilapia on a bed of coleslaw. The handhelds come with warm tortillas, Spanish rice, black beans, and P.O.E ("put on everything") sauce.

Because this is a lunch spot, you won't find alcoholic drinks. But the specialty drinks made at Yo' Mama's don't disappoint. Customers rave about the tropical splash, lemonade, and splash-lemonade combo. Soft drinks and bottled water are also available.

A visit to Yo'Mama's will enhance your Alabama getaway with its Southern hospitality and made-from-scratch cuisine.
