About

Just east of downtown Birmingham is the world's largest collection of motorcycles. The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum houses over 1,800 bikes in a state-of-the-art facility.

Even if you don't like race cars and motorcycles, you should visit just to take in the expansive museum and the beautiful 880-acre grounds. Consider combining a visit with other area things to do, like hiking at Oak Mountain State Park or visiting the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame & Museum.

Famed racer George Barber founded the museum. In the 1960s, he raced Porsches and accumulated an impressive 63 wins. Ever a motorsports fan, George shifted gears from cars to creating a museum for motorcycles. With the gift of a rare 1952 Victoria Bergmeister, George was well on his way!

His vision led to the museum's inception, which opened in 1995 at its original South Birmingham location. As his collection grew, he knew he needed a better location. Additionally, he wanted a race track to be incorporated into the experience.

His dream became a reality in 2003 when the current world-class facility and renowned 2.38-mile European-style race track opened. Equally impressive is that the Porsche Track Experience utilizes the Barber Motorsport Park track for its driving opportunities. Porsche's official U.S. driving school has programs for all skill levels to learn high-performance driving techniques on a professional-grade FIA-certified track.

Visiting this one-of-a-kind facility is a must for any racing aficionado and will equally fascinate those without a penchant for motorsports. You'll discover artistry with these machines and appreciate the architecture, statues, and amenities that make this one of Birmingham's premier destinations.

Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum: Fun Facts & Cool Features

As discussed, the most obvious fact is that the Guinness World Records recognizes the museum as having the most extensive collection of motorcycles. With over 1,800 bikes and 200 manufacturers represented, the Alabama museum spans more than a century of motorcycling history.

Along the same lines, another impressive fact is that 99% of the motorcycles are operational. In other words, you'll feast your eyes on mint-condition bikes and not rusted, pieced-together machines.

When you visit, you'll marvel and perhaps dream of driving on the race track. The Porsche Track Experience can turn this fantasy into reality. They offer introductory sessions to advanced training, including video reviews and real-world racing preparation. If you've ever dreamed of flying around sharp corners in a high-powered Porsche, this is your chance!

Non-racing fans will appreciate the museum's brilliantly designed architecture. The facility has five floors of open, airy design, with the centerpiece being a massive glass elevator capable of transporting bikes between levels. While practical, it also makes every corner of the museum feel like a work of art.

The museum is also the hub for exciting annual events like the Barber Vintage Festival. This event occurs every October and is one of the largest antique motorcycle festivals globally. In addition to being a world-renowned swap and bike show, it also has thrilling racing competitions. Make a day of it by bringing a picnic lunch from Birmingham Wings & Waffles, or refuel at any downtown eatery like Bamboo on 2nd.

The Barber Small Bore caters to those who love smaller motorcycles with a jam-packed weekend of racing and entertainment. The atmosphere is electric, drawing people from around the globe to celebrate the heritage of motorsports.

Visiting the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum on your Alabama vacation promises an experience rich with history, engineering, and adrenaline-fueled excitement.
