Rocky Point, more traditionally known as Puerto Peñasco is home to a variety of restaurants, activities, and fun for all! The following eight activities are our top picks to kick things off on your getaway!

1. Visit Bird Island

Bird Island is an incredible island off the coast of Rocky Point. The boat ride there is just about 2 hours each way, but this commute by boat is completely worth it. Upon arrival, you’ll witness nature like never before! Around 3,000 sea lions are believed to occupy this island and you will be able to see them sunbathing on rocks from a distance that is safe for both people and the animals. In addition, there will be plenty of birds and fish nearby to observe.

What makes this a great family excursion is the fact that it’s an all-in-one package. Not only will you get transportation to and from the island, but you will also be able to enjoy water sports. They offer kayaking and snorkeling gear on board so you can enjoy the island to its fullest extent. Considering that lunch is also included, the cost for this activity is reasonable.

2. Golf

Dads will delight knowing that there are fantastic golfing opportunities in this small beach town. In fact, there are 3 worthwhile courses to take advantage of. Each course comes with its own benefits and caveats so here’s a little info so you can make the best choice.

Firstly, the Jack Nicklaus course at the Vidanta. This is the most popular, challenging, and expensive of the three we recommend. But, you will not regret your visit here!

3. Water Sports

The water sport opportunities in Rocky Point are endless! Select from a number of companies and price points for popular adventures in the Sea of Cortez such as kayaking, snorkeling, jet skiing, parasailing, and more! These types of activities are readily available so you can decide to plan and book ahead or find vendors along the beach selling the experiences.

4. Visit El Pinacate Biosphere Reserve

El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar is a biosphere reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Managed by the federal government of Mexico, this area is highly protected. It’s one of the few biospheres in the world that is mostly untouched by humans or any other outside source. In order to take professional photos here, you even need a special permit which takes months to get approved.

So what’s so special about this Biosphere Reserve? In total, there are ten large and unique craters on the property, believed to have been as a result of meteors crashing. There are over 400 volcanoes in the area which create scenic peaks. But don’t worry – they’re mostly dormant. The last eruption is believed to have been 11,000-13,000 years ago.

In addition, El Pinacate Biosphere Reserve is home to a staggering number of unique flora and fauna. There are nearly 550 vascular plant species. There are also over 40 unique mammals, more than 200 birds, over 40 reptiles, and numerous amphibians & freshwater fish species present.

5. Eat Seafood

You can’t visit a famous fishing village without taking time to indulge in the fresh seafood cuisine! There are quite a few renowned seafood restaurants in town to choose from with many being close to the Malecon area. Some of the fan favorites include El Buzo, La Negrita, Boo Bar, Pedro’s and Santo Coyote Ocean Cantina. But, your options are plentiful. Keep an open mind and explore the gastronomic offerings of Peñasco for yourself. You’ll find so much more than you bargained for!

6. Rent an ATV

It’s likely that as soon as you enter Peñasco, you’ll spot plenty of tourists winding through the streets on an ATV. Renting an ATV here is almost a rite of passage! They’re available to rent all over town and they’re allowed practically everywhere in the city. Further, there is an open-sand area right off the resort strip where many people like to go for a more adventurous ride. For the best rental experience, it’s good to note that most places will require an ID or credit card to hold as collateral. In addition, it’s a good idea to explore your options and ask around for the best deal.

7. Visit the Tequila Factory

The Malecon radiates life and excitement. This hub is where many people come together and enjoy meals together, shop, walk around, and take in what people love Rocky Point for. This area is always busy, especially during peak weekends and holidays. At night, the streets light up and come alive, as this is the area with the highest number of late-night restaurants and bars.
