About

Deep in Costa Rica’ rainforest, about a 35-minute drive from Jaco, is one of the nation’s tallest natural wonders: Bijagual Waterfall.

Imagine standing at the base of this 600-foot wonder, watching cascading water gush over the slick rocky face of the mountain and land in a pool by your feet.

Now you can! While some hike on their own to the falls, we strongly encourage using the tour agency associated with Bijagual Waterfall. The rates are reasonable, and they allow you to explore on foot or horseback. We’ll discuss this in more detail in our next section.

Historically, the Bijagual rainforest has been inhabited by indigenous peoples for centuries. According to legends, the waterfall was a special place where spirits resided to guide the natives and protect the land.

If you are seeking the ultimate day of adrenaline-filled fun, Bijagual Waterfall’s proximity to Jaco makes it possible to visit the falls in the morning with an afternoon at Adventure Tours Costa Rica or Royal Butterflies.

When looking for a chance to witness Costa Rica’s natural wonders away from the crowds, plan a trip to Bijagual Falls.

Bijagual Waterfall: Fun Facts & Cool Features

Let’s begin with a fun fact crucial to a successful day at Bijagual Falls. There are two entrances to the falls, and both are on private property and require an entrance fee. One pathway leads to the middle of the falls, while the other leads to the base of the falls. We’ll be discussing this trail and tour. Now, let’s explore the trek details so you can make a well-informed decision before arriving.

The out-and-back trail is about 7 km (4.35 miles) with an elevation gain of 320 meters (1,049 feet). Hikers on various trail apps list the hike as hard and report that the pathway is not well-maintained. It can also be slippery after rains, has steep descents, and requires peak fitness to be enjoyable and safe.

Now that we have the bad news out of the way let’s look at the good news! On your journey, you’ll get a firsthand chance to experience the Costa Rican rainforest and see amazing animals, birds, and vegetation.

Another cool feature, literally, is the shallow river crossings and the pools. After a balmy hike through the thick vegetation, there’s nothing as refreshing as swimming in the pools. A hiker estimated that one pool was five feet deep, but this fluctuates with the seasons and rainfall.

If hiking isn’t appealing, book a 3.5-hour horseback tour to the falls. The trail follows a different route than the footpath, making this adventure perfect for those of any age or fitness level. You’ll be on horseback for 45 minutes, then dismount and continue on foot to the falls.

After visiting Bijagual Waterfall, celebrate at one of Jaco’s popular eateries like Hartley Ranch.

For those seeking a blend of natural beauty, adventure, and cultural richness, Bijagual Waterfall is essential to any Costa Rican vacation.
