Bishop's Palace, otherwise known as The Gresham House/Castle is arguably the most iconic and grand house in all of Galveston. Made from stone and steel, it's withstood the test of time and quite a few historic hurricanes since being built. Additionally, this home is recognized as a National Landmark. It is also cited by the American Institute of Architects as one of the 100 most important buildings in America.

Architecture & History

The mansion was designed by renowned Galveston architect Nicholas J Clayton for the Gresham family. The sturdy build of the home allowed for it to stand strong against the Great Hurricane of 1900. This hurricane devastated Galveston and all its residents when it occurred. Few homes survived and thousands of people perished. After the hurricane hit, the Gresham family took in hundreds of survivors in their mansion.

Bishop's Palace is deceiving from the outside. Though it may not look that huge, it actually boasts 19,082 square feet and four floors! The lower floor has been converted to the gift shop. This is also where the self-guided tour begins. The three floors above-ground serve as the main living areas.

So why is this home so special? It's named on various lists recognizing its importance due to the history and design. The exterior of the home features sculpted granite, limestone, and sandstone. The Gresham family spared no expense when it came to design details.

Stained Glass

Stained glass is an expensive and detailed touch throughout the palace. Unfortunately, much of the original stained glass did not survive hurricanes and had to be replaced over time. Allegedly, the Bishop who owned the home after the Greshams added his own style when it came to replacing these windows!

Ornate Decorations

The ornate decorations throughout the exterior and interior of the home is part of what earned this mansion various titles. Outside, there is detailed steel railing along every balcony and walking area of the home. There are intricately sculpted rare minerals and ornaments everywhere you look. Inside the home, luxurious furniture and furnishings are preserved. Additionally, there are rare and grand fireplaces built in throughout the house.

Fun fact: The cost estimation to build this home back in the day is $250,000. This home is worth over $5.5 million today!

In the photos, you may notice some scaffolding outside on the left of the home. The foundation was installing new lightning rods to prevent being struck by lightning!
