About

Located nearby the Historic District or the Strand are various notable businesses. One of the shops you can't miss checking out is the Maceo Spice & Import Company shop on Market St. They double as a cafe as well! The counter cafe offers Italian sandwiches, soups, and daily lunch specials.

The grocery store itself carries various high-quality ingredients. From meats and cheeses to their famous spices. Maceo's stocks their shelves with items from all over the world! According to their website, Maceo's originally stocked their shelves for chefs to view as they placed their orders. Today, Maceo's is both a wholesale and retail store as well as a cafe.

Keep in mind that aside from the staples they always have on hand, their meat selection varies every week. Furthermore, considering the quality of spices, we'd say they're very reasonable priced. Spices come in at around $6 per container. Some other specialty items you may find here include olive oil, coffee, and teas.

If you choose to dine-in, there is seating at the counter or booths in the middle of the shop. Additionally, there are plenty of cafeteria-style tables outside lining the front and side of the building. Outside there is also a very striking mural painted on the wall. This would make for an awesome photo spot!

Maceo's goal is to provide customers with the finest products available. You can bet that they are using only the best in their cafe items as well. Though the menu is on the smaller side, their food packs a punch! Get ready for the largest sandwiches you've ever seen!

Here's what we recommend from the Maceo Cafe:

Muffaletta

The Muffaletta's are Maceo's claim to fame! Served on Italian loaf bread is Maceo's olive salad, ham, salami, and provolone. Changes for this sandwich are not allowed. Additionally, this signature sandwich comes in either a half ($9.95) or whole portion ($16.00).

Tiger Shark

The Tiger Shark is another popular sandwich at Maceo's. Served warm, it comes with fresh sopressata, capicollo, provolone, and po'boy dressing. Also, it comes with a pickle on the side. Another option for a warm sandwich is the Katbird. The Katbird comes with turkey, capicollo, pickle, po' boy dressing, and provolone cheese.

Cannoli

Maceo's cannoli recipe has earned them a reputation for having the best cannoli's on the island! These authentic Italian desserts are the perfect level of sweet and creamy without being overwhelming. The outer shell is fried to perfection with just the right amount of crunch. In addition, they are topped with powdered sugar and pistachio pieces. We can vouch that these are worth the price - we had to double back for seconds the next day!

Local Tips

  • The shop is open until 5PM, but the cafe is only open until 3PM.
  • The mural on the exterior of the shop makes for a great photo spot!
