About

Long before hot tubs were invented, Mother Nature supplied everything needed for a delightful experience. If soaking in natural tepid waters and taking in the grandeur of the Gem State sounds fantastic, then plan a trip to Kirkham Hot Springs.

Kirkham Hot Springs is on the scenic Payette River in the Boise National Forest. When you arrive, you’ll see the steam rising into the air before you see the springs. Geothermal water bubbles out at the hilltop and flows to the rocks below.

If you want to make a day exploring the area, visit the nearby Pine Flats Hot Spring and drive the Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway. The amount of natural attractions in the area to include in your itinerary is mindboggling!

Located five miles from Kirkham Campground, the landmark has a staircase leading to the soaking pools and steaming waterfalls. The easy access makes it ideal for all ages.

Spending time at this landmark will enhance, relax, and rejuvenate your soul.

Kirkham Hot Springs: Fun Facts & Cool Features

One standout feature is its unique setting along the Payette River. The hot springs cascade into terraced pools along the riverbank, creating a one-of-a-kind soaking experience. The rushing water will serenade you while the picturesque forest backdrop will lull you into a dream.

Unlike other Idaho hot springs, getting to the water is relatively safe and easy. There are no rivers to ford and the trek is short and not challenging. Do take caution as the rocks and terrain can be slippery.

A cool feature is that there is a vault restroom near the parking area. Drinking water is unavailable, so be sure to pack in liquids and snacks for your visit. Also, with no shade at the river and pools, the sun can be hot in the summer, so plan accordingly.

A fun fact is that the Kirkham Ridge Trail will appeal to those who want to combine a hike with a soak. The trailhead is a 1/4 of a mile away, has signs, with an information kiosk near Kirkham Campground.

Plan on this attraction taking 1- 2 hours to enjoy, but this can be extended with a hike or a picnic. Also, we listed etiquette rules in our Insider Tips section, but here are a few more:

  • Nudity isn't allowed.
  • Do not bathe or use soap products in the hot springs.

Whether you seek relaxation or adventure, Kirkham Hot Springs is an ideal destination for a memorable day trip on your Garden Valley vacation.
