Situated north of Garden Valley, Rocky Canyon Hot Springs promises relaxation, rejuvenation, and a touch of the extraordinary. The natural springs are convenient to other attractions like Idaho Whitewater Unlimited and Idaho Sleigh Rides. Such convenience makes planning multiple activities in a day easy!
The springs have long been a treasured retreat. Nestled beside the Middle Fork Payette River, it was formed by geothermal activity heating mineral-rich water bubbling up from the earth. Visitors have enjoyed its soothing benefits for years, making it a longstanding destination for nature and outdoor enthusiasts.
Volunteers built three cascading rock-and-sand pools on the hill and several pools on the bank. The cascading pools invite guests to immerse, relax, and soak amidst Idaho's natural wonders. Each pool varies in temperature. The higher ones can be 100°, while the lower ones are cooler. Test the water before hopping in to prevent injuries or discover the water isn't warm enough to your liking.
When you visit, there are some etiquette guidelines to follow. Volunteers constructed the pools with boulders and rock walls, so don't move them. At the same time, the warm temperatures will tempt you to bathe, don't! Soaps, shampoos, and other chemicals will pollute the water and the river. Rocky Canyon Hot Springs: Fun Facts & Cool Features
The trail to the springs isn't much of a hike at all! The half-mile trail takes visitors along lush pine forests and rolling hills, making for an enjoyable trek. It is moderately challenging, ensuring a rewarding experience when you arrive at the springs.
A cool feature, literally, is fording the river. The water is cold, and the current can be swift. The river is the shallowest in June, with the deepest section (in the middle) coming up to your waist. For these reasons, crossing isn't ideal for small children or pets. But the tiered pools are worth the chilly crossing!
Most guests advise visiting in late spring, summer, or early fall. While the springs are open year-round, winter snow and muddy conditions limit access. Fording the river in this season is dangerous, extremely cold, and could be life-threatening.
Also, the springs are crowded during peak hours or on weekends. For a more private experience, arrive early on weekdays. Also, it's safer to travel in small groups versus solo.
An inspiring feature of this natural wonder is the picturesque setting. The backdrop adds to the enchantment of the spring, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers, picnics, and photographers.
Additionally, you can coordinate driving the Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway with a stop at the hot springs. You'll enjoy taking in Idaho's natural beauty on the parkway and soaking up its grandeur in a hot spring—it's the best of both worlds!

Getting There
Here are step-by-step directions to Rocky Canyon Hot Springs from Garden Valley :
- Head north on ID-55 N toward Banks Lowman Rd.
- Turn right onto Banks Lowman Rd and continue for 11 miles.
- Look for the pull-off parking area just before mile marker 4 sign.
- From the parking area, follow the trail down to the Payette River.
- Cross the shallow section of the river carefully (ensure conditions are safe).
- Continue along the trail, which leads uphill to Rocky Canyon Hot Springs.
- Address: Banks Lowman Rd, Garden Valley, ID 83622.
Local Tips
- Pack towels, swimwear, drinking water, and snacks in a dry bag. The nearest facilities are limited, so come prepared.
- Sturdy water shoes are recommended for crossing the river. Look for the rope to assist fording.
- Follow Leave No Trace principles by packing all trash and leaving the area as you found it.
- Rocky Canyon Hot Springs is particularly magical during sunrise or sunset. Plan your visit accordingly.
