About
"Promising the Future by Preserving the Present!" is not only the website slogan for the Hatteras Island Ocean Center, it's the DNA of this facility.
Our story begins with the Hatteras Island-Ocracoke Anglers Club's purchase of the old Coast Guard barracks in 2004. Their primary goal was to preserve this historic building and transform it into a space that celebrates the area's maritime heritage.
Over time, the vision evolved into a non-profit organization dedicated to sharing coastal science in hands-on ways. Today, the center is sponsored by the Hatteras Village Civic Association, offering eco-centric programs and activities for all ages.
As part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the center works to preserve sea turtles, offers kayak nature tours, and family-friendly programs that inform and entertain.
Its proximity to the Ocracoke Ferry makes it easy to combine an ecotour with a visit to Ocracoke Island. Also nearby is Frisco Beach and the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, making it easy to create a fun-filled itinerary that the whole family will enjoy.
Visiting the Hatteras Island Ocean Center offers you an immersive experience into "Promising the Future by Preserving the Present!"
Hatteras Island Ocean Center: Fun Facts & Cool Features
What makes a visit so exciting is that the facility makes learning fun.
Inside the small center, the exhibits, a small aquarium, and stuffed wildlife offer insight into the ecosystems on Hatteras Island.
Another perk to visiting is the elevated covered deck. Here, colorful Adirondack chairs invite you to relax and take in the sights of Pamlico Sound. A small picnic area is on-site, while next door is Happy Belly, serving some of the best ice cream in the area.
Where this attraction shines is in the various programs it offers. A popular activity is the Kayak Nature Tour available for adults and children seven or older. This two-hour guided adventure gives you a firsthand encounter with the wildlife of the salt marsh.
If you prefer to go solo, the center is near an easy public water access. In no time, you'll be exploring Sandy Bay and Slash Creek at your leisure. If you need to rent a kayak or paddleboard, Slash Creek Outfitters is nearby.
For those who prefer to stay on land, the boardwalk and marsh trail are an ideal choice. It is an easy trek that puts you right in the heart of the wetlands. While the hike is short, it packs a wallop with wildlife in the waters and trees, so keep your eyes peeled.
One activity your entire family will enjoy is fishing for Blue Crab. Although you don't need a license, it's essential to follow the regulations. You can rent gear from Frisco Rod & Gun along with Teach’s Lair.
We saved the best for last! Turtle Patrol is a seasonal event that offers an informative lesson, accompanied by a visit to the nesting grounds. You'll also learn about Turtle Sense, which uses egg-sized sensors to detect turtle activity and hatchings. This high-tech gadget alerts marine biologists' cell phones, allowing them to manage the protection of the area more effectively.
All these programs and outdoor opportunities make the Hatteras Island Ocean Center a must-visit when vacationing on the Outer Banks. It turns a simple visit into a deeper connection with North Carolina's natural wonders.
