About

South Congress Avenue is the main tree-lined boulevard through Austin, known for its artsy vibe along South Congress (SoCo) and its premier landmarks in the Downtown Congress section.

Considered the “Main Street of Texas”, Congress Avenue stretches a whopping 2 miles. Mile one is the downtown portion with historic buildings, while SoCo extends 1.5 miles to Ben White Boulevard. First paved in 1910 with concrete, this fun-filled street has been hopping ever since!

Like identical twins, both areas have the same DNA, yet distinctly different personalities. Downtown Congress is your go-to destination for culture and government attractions, such as the Bullock Texas State History Museum, the State Capitol, The Paramount Theatre, and the Blanton Museum of Art.

The Colorado River marks the SoCo region with the South Congress Bridge, which is home to the famous bat colony. Continue south over the bridge and you're led to a bohemian-style neighborhood jammed with boutiques, eateries, nightspots, the "I love you so much" mural, and much more.

Downtown Congress Avenue serves as the city’s cultural and historical center. Its centerpiece is the Texas State Capitol, completed in 1888, an architectural marvel towering proudly over the area. Free tours of this National Historic Landmark are available daily. More information can be found at TSPB Capitol Tours.

The atmosphere on Congress Avenue is one-of-a-kind. Downtown is bustling with city life, but still has that laid-back Austin vibe, making sightseeing a joy. SoCo is a treasure trove of distinctive shops, live music, and funky shops. All these combine to make it perfect for those with an adventurous spirit!

When you're looking for something to do on your Highland Lakes vacation that will appeal to everyone in your group, visit Congress Avenue.

South Congress Avenue: Fun Facts & Cool Features

Let's begin our journey exploring the features of Downtown Congress Avenue.

One fascinating historical story happened during the Great Depression. In 1936, President Franklin D Roosevelt visited Austin and toured Congress Avenue in an open-car parade. Thousands of people lined the street to greet him, his presence symbolizing hope in Texas and across America.

Along with the museums mentioned above, include The Contemporary Austin at the Jones Center in your itinerary. Here, modern art is showcased in a sleek, urban setting. Also of interest is the Mexic-Arte Museum featuring Latin-inspired artwork, events, and the host site of the Day of the Dead festival.

After a day downtown, enjoy a delicious meal at any of the popular restaurants. Fine dining awaits at The Capital Grille, while Red Ash serves Italian cuisine in a contemporary setting.

Now, on to SoCo! One of the most popular attractions is gathering at the Congress Avenue Bridge at dusk to watch the bats. From March until October, 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats explode into the air, creating a cloud-like presence.

Just a short drive from South Congress Avenue is the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum. Unlike the downtown museum, this facility is outdoors and exudes the personality of SoCo. The museum is home to the artwork of Charles Umlauf, a notable 20th-century American sculptor. You'll discover many genres, from the religious to the mythological and abstract.

After checking out the coffee shops, boutiques, and murals, celebrate your day with a delicious meal and refreshing beverages. Perla's serves mouth-watering seafood in a beach-vibe setting, offering the best of fine dining with the laid-back vibe of a seaside shanty. Italian fare is the focus at Vespaio Ristorante, named after the wasp nests discovered during renovation. While the insects are long gone, the savory flavors and relaxing atmosphere live on.

As you can see, visiting Congress Ave on your Highland Lakes getaway is not only a must, it's essential.
