Huntsville is famously known as the “Rocket City” because of its essential role in the development of the U.S. space program. During the Space Race of the 1960s, NASA established the Marshal Space Flight Center here. Huntsville became the hub for designing and testing rockets, including those that helped with Apollo missions to the moon.

Even before the race to the moon, after World War II German rocket scientist Dr. Wernher von Braun and his team arrived in Huntsville to work with the U.S. Army in developing the Redstone Rocket.
