About

West of Huntsville near Madison is Barrio Modern Mexican, which offers Latin-inspired food with a creative twist.

Chef Justin Haefler brings his 27 years of culinary expertise to Barrio, creating modern Mexican dishes with bold flavors and innovative techniques.

Through Chef Justin's leadership, the restaurant operates under a simple yet profound motto, "Food is Life, Treat it as Such!" You'll taste this philosophy in every dish, where commitment to quality, freshness, and creativity is job number one.

You'll find traditional Mexican classics like tacos and burritos, but each comes with a spin not found at other taquerias. Additionally, items from the grill add to the menu's wonders, offering mouth-watering options for various palates.

While a short drive from Huntsville, it's close enough to key landmarks to combine a meal with a sightseeing adventure. For instance, after visiting the Cook Museum of Natural Science in Decatur, swing up to Barrio for Mexican cuisine. Or check out the US Space & Rocket Center and then cruise over to Barrio for lunch or dinner.

Whether exploring vibrant tacos, ordering takeout for a picnic, or sipping a handcrafted margarita, Barrio Modern Mexican is a must-visit destination for those who appreciate quality and creativity.

Vibe

Located in a small strip mall beside a gas station, it would be easy to assume this eatery is another cookie-cutter Mexican joint. Trust us, it's not!

While the facade lacks the typical pizazz of other Mexican restaurants, the contemporary neon blue sign sizzles and is your first clue that something unique is cooking inside.

This hip theme continues indoors with wooden tables, tiled floors, and an open concept that makes for a cheerful setting. The colorful abstract face mural on one wall transcends the Latin art of other cantinas, once more hinting at the modern cuisine prepared in the kitchen.

The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a casual yet stylish ambiance. The recessed lighting and ceiling fan provide a comfortable dining experience, while the bar invites casual or solo diners.

The overall vibe is one of creativity and warmth, reflecting the restaurant's modern take on Mexican cuisine.

Barrio Modern Mexican: Menu & Drinks

While you enjoy the complimentary chips and salsa, order some freshly made guacamole to kickstart your dining experience.

It features avocado, onion, tomatoes, cilantro, jalapeño, and lime. If you're afraid the jalapeño heat is too much, rest assured that the citrus tempers it well.

The grilled entrees are showstoppers, showcasing tender and juicy cuts of steak, carnitas, and chicken. Combine with the made-from-scratch Mole and other Latin-inspired sauces, and your taste buds will dance with delight.

Of course, tacos abound on the menu, with the Piglet being a tip of the hat to Southern fare. This savory handheld features crispy pork belly with salsa negra and lime-garlic cabbage. The roasted pineapple salsa unites the pork's saltiness and the citrus-infused cabbage into a powerhouse of flavor.

The Rocket City is an ode to Huntsville's well-earned nickname. It features grilled steak, cotija cheese, chili aioli, guacamole, and pickled red onion. It's an out-of-this-world taste experience.

Of note are the corn tortillas made in-house with fresh masa, making for the ultimate street or traditional taco. While flour tortillas are available, keep in mind that they aren't freshly made.

When you're ready to toast a special occasion or celebrate shopping at Bridge Street Town Centre, you can't go wrong with the cocktails. Like the food, the craft margaritas will elevate your dining experience with fresh ingredients and creative twists.

With a full bar, traditional cocktails are available, along with beer and wine choices. Non-alcoholic options include soft drinks, Aqua Frescas, and coffee and tea.

With fresh, authentic flavors and welcoming service, Barrio Modern Mexican connects Huntsville diners to diverse Mexican cuisine.
