About

When your Rocket City vacation needs the great outdoors, head to nearby Monte Sano State Park.

Spanning 2,140 acres, this natural wonderland has something for everyone! From disc golf, camping, mountain biking, hiking, planetarium…the list seems endless!

Monte Sano means “Mountain of Health” in Spanish and reflects an era when visitors came to enjoy the mineral springs and clean air for wellness. The lavish 233-room Hotel Monte Sano was constructed in 1887 as a health resort and attracted the likes of Helen Keller, the Vanderbilts, and the Astors.

Though the hotel and its adjacent railway are long gone, the spirit of rejuvenation remains central to the park today.

During the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began transforming the mountain. Using local stone and wood, the CCC constructed 11 cabins, a lodge, and an amphitheater. On August 25, 1938, Monte Sano State Park officially opened.

Today, modern-day explorers visit the vast hiking and biking trails weaving through the forested terrain. The 18-hole disc golf course is also popular and spans the entire top of the mountain. There is also an 8-hole mini-disc golf course, ensuring something for every skill level.

Wildlife and seasonal blooms, such as native azaleas, add colorful touches to the landscape. The park’s rustic stone cabins, with updated modern amenities, provide a peaceful overnight experience. You’ll also find primitive campsites, RV-friendly spots, and even glamping tents.

Whether you are seeking a quiet retreat or an active escape, Monte Sano State Park will enhance your Alabama getaway.
