The center opened its doors in 1970, attracting visitors worldwide to its state-of-the-art facility. Here, guests experience NASA's history with exhibits and interactive activities like the G-Force Accelerator.
But how did the USSRC wind up in Huntsville? Our story begins in 1950 when German scientist Wernher von Braun came to the United States as part of Operation Paperclip. In 1956, the Army Ballistic Missile Agency was established at Redstone Arsenal. Here, Wernher von Braun and his fellow German rocket scientists launched America's space program and transformed Huntsville into the Rocket City.
This legacy led to the center's creation. When you visit, you can witness over 1,500 artifacts, including rockets, spacecraft, and interactive exhibits spanning decades.
One of its most admired features is the full-scale Space Shuttle replica, Pathfinder. You'll marvel at the incredible engineering feats achieved during missions like Apollo and beyond. It's also home to the Apollo 16 command module, an authentic relic of lunar exploration.

The other Saturn V is in the Davidson Center for Space Exploration. Viewing it up close will give you a sense of the unparalleled scale and effort behind NASA's lunar missions.
Another fun fact is that the USSRC is the world's largest STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) camp! From Space Camps offering varying challenges and experiences to Space Robotics Camp, there's something for every child and adult.

- Start on Clinton Avenue West and head toward Governors Drive SW (US-431 S/AL-53 S).
- Merge onto I-565 W/US-72 Alt. W via the ramp on the left.
- Stay on I-565 W for 4.5 miles.
- Take Exit 15 for Madison Pike toward Sparkman Drive.
- Keep left at the fork and follow signs for Madison Pike/Sparkman Drive/US Space & Rocket Center.
- Turn left onto Old Madison Pike NW.
- Follow signs for the main entrance to the parking lot.
