About

High on the slopes of Hualālai is an ecosystem rare to find in the United States: a cloud forest. The Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary is a unique phenomenon in moist tropical forests and is characterized by persistent low-level clouds.

The sanctuary's location on the slopes of Hualālai allows it to capture the moisture-laden winds from the Pacific. In such ideal conditions, a cloud forest is created.

This attraction is a short drive from Kailua-Kona and is home to various plant and animal species not found anywhere else in the world. Because of such proximity, it makes planning a fun-filled itinerary easy. Visit nearby Makahi St Trailhead for a challenging hike through the rainforest, or explore Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park for an immersive journey into Hawaiian history.

Norman Bezona, the founder of the sanctuary, discovered a 20-acre piece of deforested cattle land in 1982. Ultimately, it would become the Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary. He brought his expertise to the forefront as a world traveler and professor emeritus at the University of Hawaiʻi, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources.

Over time, the entire Bezona family worked to restore trees in the cloud forest and purchase an additional 10 acres. Today, the family continues to steward this valuable ecosystem, expanding the sanctuary to over 70 acres.

Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary also offers meditation and other tours, making it a top choice amongst vacationers.

A fascinating feature of the Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary is its incredible biodiversity. The forest is home to ancient Koa and 'Ōhi'a trees, 100 varieties of bamboo, and gigantic tree ferns, some soaring to 30 feet! This rich plant life provides habitats for numerous species of birds and insects, contributing to the vibrant ecosystem of the forest.

Guided tours are another perk of visiting, allowing an immersive educational experience into the unique flora and fauna. During these tours, you'll feel the misty air, smell the fresh greenery, and hear the calls of the forest's avian inhabitants. They also offer private photo shoots, Mindfulness Experiences, workshops, and more.
