Orlando is an easy drive-to destination from across the Southeast, with I-95 providing direct access. Orlando is located about 4 hours from Miami, around 7 hours from Atlanta, and only about 1½ hours from Tampa.
For those flying to the area, the Orlando International Airport (MCO) is the biggest and busiest airport in Florida as it serves as a hub for several airlines. While super convenient due to location, be sure to plan for plenty of additional time when flying into or out of Orlando directly. The smaller Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) may be another option, mainly serving charter and lower-cost airlines.
If you are flying to the Orlando area, renting a car is highly recommended as attractions and neighborhoods are spread out and public transportation is limited. A car is definitely the most efficient way to navigate the area.

Orlando is centrally located in the heart of Florida and not considered a beach destination. However, with Tampa, Jacksonville Beaches, and Miami just an hour to two hours away by car, it’s definitely feasible to combine a beach-day into an Orlando adventure. The most accessible beach option is Cocoa Beach, about an hour east of Orlando. It’s worth noting that Orlando is home to more than 100 lakes, so there are plenty of inviting water activities nearby. This includes several beautiful natural springs.
Orlando offers year-round sunshine, which makes it attractive at any time. It has a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Hurricane season runs from June through November, but direct hits are rare. Higher temps and humidity coincide with the area’s rainy season, which can stretch until early Fall. Orlando’s mild winters make it ideal for snowbirds, while Spring and Fall offer perfect weather.
Absolutely! Orlando offers plenty of outdoor recreation with its many lakes, world-class golf courses, and beautiful gardens. Orlando has a vibrant cultural and arts scene, as well as numerous unique neighborhoods to explore. Live music, festivals, and sporting events are also key attractions in the area.
