Arriving at the Phoenix Airport

The bustling Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix serves 1,200 daily flights, including 500 non-stop. Recent polls dubbed Sky Harbor the “Friendliest Airport in America.” As soon as you arrive, you’ll notice several purple jackets around. These are the 400+ volunteer Navigators who welcome visitors and serve as Phoenix travel information ambassadors. The Sky Harbor airport scores fifth in the nation for having the fewest flight cancellations.

One of the best things about Sky Harbor is its easy access to Downtown Phoenix. For just $2, you can reach downtown in 20 minutes via the PHX Sky Train. The PHX Sky Train departs from the terminal every three minutes, 24 hours a day. If you rent a car, you can reach downtown in 10 minutes. Parking costs are extraordinarily inexpensive compared to airport lots in other top markets.

Other smaller airports serving the Greater Phoenix region include the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (which primarily deals with Allegiant Air) and the Phoenix Deer Valley airport (located 15 miles north of downtown).

Phoenix Transportation Options

Cars are still the primary mode of transportation around Phoenix, especially if you need to visit cities on the periphery of the metro area. The grid system is relatively easy to navigate.

For most travel purposes, a $4 day pass on the beloved Valley Metro Light Rail system will get you to Downtown Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa. The 26-mile line makes 35 stops, including area attractions like the Heard Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, Talking Stick Resort Arena, and the Mill Avenue District. Air-conditioned trains run 18-22 hours a day, seven days a week, stopping every 12-20 minutes.

You can arrange Phoenix Transit Bus travel for citywide or regional transportation by calling 602-253-5000. Phoenix offers Dial-A-Ride service for people with disabilities from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.

You can also find taxis easily along the major Light-Rail stops and popular destinations. The fare for local trips is between $10-15. Uber and Lyft ride-share services are also competitors in the Phoenix area.
