About

One restaurant to include on your vacation to-do list is Pepe's Tacos. This iconic hotspot has been delighting diners since 1987 and is considered a rite of passage when in Puerto Vallarta.

Our story begins in 1987 when Don Jose "Pepe" Curiel moved from Mexico City to Puerto Vallarta. Upon arrival, he was shocked to discover that you couldn't find tacos al pastor anywhere in town! So, he got the idea to open a shop, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Aside from being the original restaurant serving al pastor tacos, it is one of the few places open all night long, closing at 6 AM. After a night on Malecón Boardwalk or at the crack of dawn before a tee time at Vista Vallarta Golf Club, warm tacos are available.

One of the best things about Pepe's Tacos is that they have remained affordable. Tacos range from 100-200 MXN, which is about $5-10. This pricing will appeal to families with many mouths to feed or those on a tight budget.

The open-air dining area offers a relaxed dining experience, making it appealing to those fresh off the beach or after exploring the Gringo Gulch.

With its simple setting, mouth-watering tacos, all-night service, and affordability, it's easy to understand why Pepe's Tacos is a must-visit.

Vibe

Long before you arrive, you'll catch the whiff of grilled meats and taco seasonings. The corner restaurant is brightly colored and bustling with activity like a beehive. Near the open-air archways, a worker is busy slicing fresh pork off the vertical grill. On top of the spool, a fresh pineapple drips juice onto the meat, adding more flavor.

Inside, the unpretentious setting includes plastic tables and chairs, colorful tiled walls, and handwritten signs. The open layout lets the street's energy spill into every corner. The result is a restaurant bubbling with excitement, morning, noon, and night.

While open through the night, the vibe is family-friendly while also appealing to those craving tacos after visiting clubs. Pepe's isn't polished or formal, but that's part of its appeal. It's a spot where everyone feels welcome and everything feels genuine.

Pepe's offers an authentic taste of Puerto Vallarta's community and spirit, making it a must on your Mexican getaway.

Pepe's Tacos: Menu & Drinks

While it is known for the al pastor tacos (and they're a must-try!), the menu features other outstanding choices. Choose from a vast selection of quesadillas, tacos al carbon, tortas, tostadas, and more!

The most popular menu section is the category "de la parrilla," which translates to "Off the Grill" and comes with corn tortillas. Some popular combos include the al pastor con queso, bisteck con queso, and alambre con bocas, which include tocino and marron.

You can't go wrong with a quesadilla, and kids tend to love this flatbread-style choice! They offer over a dozen different types of quesadillas with styles for any palate. Other cultures from around the world inspire flavors, such as those found in Hawaiian, Japanese, Italian, and Mexican cuisines.

Now, let's highlight the star attraction: Tacos Al Pastor! The juicy, tender marinated pork has a subtle smoky char and comes with fresh cilantro, diced onions, and a slice of caramelized pineapple for a hint of sweetness. This deliciousness comes on handmade corn tortillas, and customers often pair it with the house salsa verde for an added kick.

With all this delicious food, you will need a refreshing beverage to wash it all down. No visit is complete without trying Pepe's Signature Margarita! This libation features top-shelf tequila, freshly squeezed lime juice, and a touch of agave nectar. It comes on the rocks in a salt-rimmed glass, with the option to add a splash of fruit flavor like mango or strawberry.

Aside from the cocktails, you'll find a wide selection of cervezas (beer), tequila, vodka, cocktails, and more. The multiple agua frescas and soft drinks will appeal to those seeking non-alcoholic beverages.

When seeking food after a day at Arte VallARTa Museum or dancing the night away, visit Pepe's Tacos for an exceptional dining experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most popular way to reach Puerto Vallarta from abroad is by plane. The Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) receives direct flights from 50 different airports from across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, including 13 domestic flights. Officially known as the Licenciado Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport, PVR is the 7th busiest airport in Mexico. It is centrally located with easy access to the city.

Puerto Vallarta’s warm, tropical climate provides ideal year-round temperatures, with dry winters and rainy summers. Average temps range from a high of mid-90s and high humidity in the summer rainy season (June - Oct) to evening lows of upper-60s in the mild winters. November through May tend to be drier months, with less humidity, offering 10 to 12 hours of sunshine.

The best time to visit PV is from December to April, which is also considered the high season, driven largely by international visitors, retirees, and snowbirds seeking warmer climates. This is also when you’ll find humidity hasn’t kicked in yet, so walking along or spending the whole day at the beach is very enjoyable. While May - November is considered to be a lower season, there is consistent weekend activity coming from all parts of Mexico.

Puerto Vallarta offers exciting local and international events throughout the entire year, with many of these revolving around culture, gastronomy, sports, and film.

  • Puerto Vallarta Carnaval (usually late February)
  • The Mexico Open at Vidanta (PGA tournament held in February)
  • International Film Festival (March) Festival Internacional de Cine en Puerto Vallarta (FICPV)
  • Festival Fiestas de Mayo: Month-long celebration in May encompassing Puerto Vallarta’s anniversary, featuring live music, carnival rides, culture, and tradition
  • Vallarta Pride held mid to late May, attracting over 17,000 attendees
  • Day of the Dead celebrations (Nov 1) and month-long International Gourmet Festival held in November

With plenty of spots to choose from, Puerto Vallarta’s beaches are pleasantly swimmable. Still, it is important to remain alert to tides, weather, and water conditions as the Pacific Ocean can present stronger waves at certain times of the year. Winter and Spring provide the calmest waters for swimming, while the warmest water temps are Summer and Fall.

Puerto Vallarta’s star quality was thrust onto the international stage in 1963 for the filming of “The Night of the Iguana.” At that time, Mismaloya Beach welcomed the likes of Richard Burton, Eva Gardner, and Elizabeth Taylor as the city further immersed as a quintessential sunkissed vacation destination.

The stunning beaches and warm climate create an inviting environment year round, while the local community offers rich traditions, excellent cuisine, and a welcoming atmosphere. Living or visiting here means enjoying an active lifestyle outdoors and being part of a diverse and friendly community, which makes it truly special. For visitors traveling to Puerto Vallarta, taking part in vibrant community life and activities is a welcome addition to a beach getaway.
