Rocky Point

Located in the Mexican state of Sonora, Puerto Peñasco (aka Rocky Point) features beautiful sandy beaches located on the Sea of Cortez. As it is the beach closest to Phoenix and Tucson, it is commonly known affectionately as "Arizona's beach."

Just an hour from the Lukeville, AZ border crossing into Mexico, this once quiet fishing town now welcomes visitors year-round from across the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico. Retirees also favor the town and enjoy its vacation rentals on longer, more relaxed stays.

Located on the Sea of Cortez, summer months tend to be humid (particularly August and September), while fall and spring have near perfect weather to match excellent swimming sea temps. Winters in Rocky Point are bright and sunny, though temperatures can drop into the 40s at night. It's a fine time for brisk morning beach walks and extended golf outings.

While many Rocky Point residents speak English, though you may not hear much of it outside of the local hotels and bars. Learning some basic Spanish will certainly help you get around.

Whether you prefer fishing, hitting the sand dunes, shopping, or just walking around and enjoying the weather, Rocky Point has retained its charm while continually growing into the top beach destination in northwestern Mexico.
