About

The community of Las Conchas is located about 10 minutes from the center of Puerto Peñasco. In 2022, the HOA will celebrate 40 years of being a development.

History of Las Conchas

Over 60 years ago, two military veterans John McChesney and Carl Hodges saw the possibilities of the area now known as Las Conchas. McChesney struck a deal with Agustin Cortes, Sr. to purchase the land and that is when Section 1 was started. Residents in Las Conchas are known as Vecinos. The first homes were built in the mid to late 1960’s. Both McChesney and Hodges built homes in Section 5. Las Conchas has a high percentage of owners that are Arizona residents. There is no where else you can buy beach front properties at a reasonable price other than Las Conchas!

It is located on a narrow strip of land between the Sea of Cortez and the Morua Estuary on 5 miles of the most pristine beach in Rocky Point. The development consists of over 700 homes of all sizes and styles as well as some condo developments. It's a great place to build as it features 24/7 security that is provided by the HOA. The topography is such that homes on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th row all have water and/or beach views.

CEDO

Here you will find CEDO (Intercultural Center for the study of the Sonoran desert and Oceans). It is a collaboration between Mexico and the United States to further learning about the Sea of Cortez. The administration building for CEDO is located in the McChesney original home. CEDO is a learning center and also has a gift shop where you can purchase books about the Sea of Cortez and other books about the area. It can also accommodate small school groups for overnight learning experiences. They also offer estuary tours and kayak tours of the Sea of Cortez as well as tours of the Pinacate Reserve. CEDO is open daily to the public as well tour groups to learn more about the area. CEDO is located right behind the large reconstructed whale skeleton.

Las Conchas holds several fundraisers throughout the year, with the largest being the “Las Conchas Garage Sale”. The monies made for space rentals goes to several of the local charities. CEDO also holds some fundraisers.
