About
History and flavor converge at Clear Springs Restaurant, offering diners a tangible connection to the Texas frontier. With four locations in Central Texas, we'll focus on the New Braunfels location.
Long before being a restaurant, this location was a vital economic and social hub for early German settlers. Adding to its lore is that in 1825, James Bowie, the future hero of the Alamo, originally surveyed the property.
During the height of cotton production, cotton wagons would line up for long distances, waiting to be weighed. To pass the time, drivers shopped and socialized in the Clear Springs Hall and Store. Built in 1873, the store became the community's heartbeat.
Today, Clear Springs Restaurant preserves this authentic atmosphere with antique-lined walls and memorabilia from the early German community. The part of the structure serving as the main dining room was originally a dance hall, hosting everything from spirited dances to political rallies.
Its location in New Braunfels means you're close to a hearty meal after a day of sightseeing. Whether you visit Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo, McKenna Children's Museum, or Gruene Hall, the delicious food and cold drinks at Clear Springs Restaurant will hit the spot!
Dining in the 1873 building remains a vibrant part of any Central Texas getaway.
Vibe
When you first see the exterior, you'll wonder if you have traveled back in time! While it has undergone upkeep and repainting, its limestone walls and classic architecture reflect its original purpose as a cotton hall.
The interior decor is an informal museum dedicated to local heritage, featuring old farming implements and black-and-white photographs displayed on wooden planks. The vaulted, open ceiling creates a spacious feel, while warm lighting highlights the aged wood and brick.
The expansive main dining floor provides ample room for families and large groups, with sturdy, comfortable tables arranged to maximize space. For those looking to relax with a drink, the bar area offers a classic saloon feel.
The immersive ambiance will complement your Lone Star State vacation, allowing you to dine inside a piece of living history.
Clear Springs Restaurant: Menu & Drinks
A meal here often begins with the World Famous Onion Rings, a centerpiece that commands attention. A massive mound of thinly sliced, sweet onions is coated in a light, seasoned batter and fried to a golden crisp. The portion is substantial, making it an ideal appetizer to share. Also noteworthy are the fried crawfish tails, Cajun gumbo, and a variety of salads.
For the main event, the Fried Catfish is the main attraction. Clear Springs serves U.S. farm-raised catfish fillets that are hand-breaded and fried to a perfect cornmeal crust. The fish remains moist and flaky while the exterior provides the requisite snap.
Another favorite is the Fried Shrimp, prepared with the same attention to texture. Both dishes come with French fries, cole slaw, pinto beans, and hushpuppies.
If you're not a fan of fried seafood, you'll find grilled seasoned shrimp skewers, Firecracker salmon, and cornmeal-crusted trout.
And don't worry, there's more on the menu besides seafood. The variety of chicken dishes ranges from fried chicken and tenders to chicken-fried steak.
Steak lovers also have a variety of options, from the 14-oz ribeye to the 12-oz New York strip and the pork ribeye. These entrees come with two sides and Texas Toast. Also available are handhelds like burgers, po-boys, and fish tacos!
To wash down these rich flavors, the drink selection offers refreshing options. From soft drinks, teas, cocktails, and ice-cold beer, there's a beverage that will suit your meal.
A meal at Clear Springs Restaurant enhances a San Antonio getaway by offering authentic regional cuisine in a historic setting.
