About

Northeast of San Antonio, Canyon Lake offers swimming, water sports, fishing, and hiking. But this water oasis wasn't always around.

Decades ago, the Guadalupe River was unruly, bringing both floods and droughts to the Hill Country. In the 1950s, the United States Army Corps of Engineers devised a plan to build a dam to alter the river and protect communities.

It took engineers six years to build Canyon Dam, using earth and concrete to create a strong, lasting structure. By 1964, water began to fill, reaching its current level by 1968. Today, Canyon Lake covers over 8,200 acres, offering 80 miles of shoreline, making it a much-loved spot for outdoor fun and a haven for wildlife.

Over time, Canyon Lake has helped build a lively community, welcoming visitors who enjoy being close to nature. Parks managed by the Army Corps of Engineers protect the landscape and let guests enjoy the water, trails, and open spaces.

Its proximity to San Antone and New Braunfels makes it easy to visit multiple attractions in a day. For instance, after splashing at Schlitterbahn Waterpark, head to the lake for additional adventure. Or after a day on the lake, visit the Japanese Tea Garden for a zen-like experience.

Canyon Lake's story combines nature's offerings with engineering prowess to protect Central Texas.

Canyon Lake: Fun Facts & Cool Features

One of the most striking features here is the Canyon Lake Gorge. This natural marvel was formed in 2002 after a historic flood sent water rushing over the spillway. In just days, the rushing water cut a mile-long groove, revealing fossilized dinosaur tracks, ancient marine life, and even a clear view of a fault line.

An appealing feature is that the water is crystal clear. Unlike many Texas lakes, Canyon Lake has a rocky bottom and deep waters that keep the water clear and blue. Divers explore the underwater cliffs and sunken surprises, especially near the dam that drops to 125 feet.

Clear water means swimmers get a refreshing break at any of the available beaches. They feature sandy shorelines, roped-off swimming areas, and are ideal for families and children. Here is a link for more information about the beaches.

Nature and outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy strolling atop Canyon Dam. The views stretch for miles, while the dam showcases engineering expertise. Visitors gather atop the dam to enjoy the breeze on an evening walk or to snap a sunset photo.

As discussed previously, you're never far from restaurants or other activities. After a day at the lake, enjoy creative contemporary cuisine at Huisache Grill in nearby New Braunfels.

A visit to Canyon Lake fits into any Texas vacation. The Gorge brings out the science lover in just about anyone, while the clear waters make swimming, boating, and diving more fun. It's also a springboard into exploring the surrounding Hill Country.

Whether relaxing along the shore, hiking, or just watching the sky change colors over the water, this spot leaves visitors with lasting memories of Texas at its best.
