About

What started as a tribute to her beloved grandmother has blossomed into an eatery known for healthy home cooking. Simple Soul of Savannah is the brainchild of Rachel Silvers, who opened her unique eatery in 2023.

She took over the struggling Little King soul food restaurant, poured her sweat equity into its revitalization, and incorporated family recipes into the menu. And like the movie quip from Field of Dreams, "If you build it, they will come," news of the homemade goodness spread like wildfire up and down Savannah's cobblestone streets.

One example of the cuisine offered is her grandmother's turkey wings. Not only are they lip-smackingly tasty, but they are also one of Rachel's fondest childhood memories of cooking beside her grandmother.

Simple Soul also includes Rachel's oldest daughter, Destiny, who applies her food service knowledge to implement efficient systems and ensure consistent quality.

Additionally, Simple Soul supports local chefs who are without a restaurant. Such inclusion brings Caribbean menus from Britt's Kitchen, vegan creations from Miss Katie's Sweets, and even Indonesian‑Filipino offerings from Rasa Rumah Cooking.

From day one, Simple Soul's emphasis on clean ingredients has been a standout. They don't use MSG, and the vegetables are entirely meat‑free, which is rare in Southern-style cooking.

While fried chicken, fish, okra, and shrimp are staples, the spotlight is on baked and grilled items, highlighting taste without excess grease.

Its location in the Savannah Historic District makes it easy to combine soul food with sightseeing. For instance, after a zany time at a Savannah Bananas game or after exploring the fountain at Forsyth Park, meander to Simple Soul to refuel.

With its family-centric heritage and diverse menu, Simple Soul of Savannah offers a memorable dining experience.

Vibe

The standalone building blends in with the neighborhood, resembling someone's home more than a restaurant. The black and white awnings and colorful sign add the right amount of pizazz to pique one's interest.

Inside, brightly colored walls, an abundance of plants, and contemporary chairs transform the space into a modern oasis. The atmosphere is easy-going, homey, and charming.

The dining room features cozy tables for two and four, while a few umbrella-covered tables dot the front sidewalk, offering al fresco dining.

The ambiance is relaxed and nourishing, making it ideal after exploring the various artifacts at the Telfair Museums.

Simple Soul of Savannah: Menu & Drinks

While its signs and social media posts highlight that they serve vegetarian options, make no mistake: its roots are deeply rooted in Southern-style soul food. With that out of the way, let's explore the offerings at Simple Soul!

The baked chicken is a must with its golden crust and tender, juicy meat. This family recipe comes with classic Southern sides like collard greens, creamy mac and cheese, and buttery yellow rice.

Naturally, the aforementioned turkey wings feature seasonings Rachel's grandmother used in her kitchen. The wings are meaty, flavorful, and have the right amount of crunch.

Another standout is the smoked beef and gravy plate served over white rice. Diners describe it as "home‑style" and "comfort food at its best," applauding the tender beef, savory gravy, and vegetable sides. Remember, Simple Soul doesn't use MSG and avoids cooking veggies in bacon or meat grease. You'll taste the freshness with every bite!

On the lighter side is the salmon‑topped bacon avocado salad. This healthy option has generous avocado slices, crisp bacon bits, and fresh produce.

Drinks at Simple Soul are just as well‑thought-out. Fresh fruit smoothies stand out, especially those blended with moringa powder for an energizing twist.

Naturally, you'll find house‑made sweet tea that is rich and comforting. There's also a rotating lineup of freshly squeezed juices, mixing local fruits in bright, flavorful combinations.

With its rich family history, savory and healthy menu, and proximity to landmarks like the Mercer Williams House Museum, a visit is a must on your Savannah getaway.
