About

If you're fascinated by history, one landmark, the First African Baptist Church (FABC), was established in the United States before the country's founding in 1776.

Our story begins in 1773 when enslaved and free African Americans began gathering for worship. Officially organized in 1777 under the leadership of Reverend George Leile, it became a symbol of faith and resilience amid the injustices of its time.

During the late 18th century, the church provided spiritual guidance and was a beacon for education and community activism. Enslaved individuals sought comfort and strength at the church, and over time, the congregation became known for its dedication to faith and freedom.

The present structure is in the Savannah Historic District and was constructed in 1859. The enslaved congregants worked feverishly on the building to create a church that symbolized their perseverance and unity.

The church's proximity to other landmarks and attractions makes it easy to create a fun-filled itinerary. For instance, consider combining a visit to FABC with a tour of the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist. Or explore Chippewa Square and the boutiques and restaurants along River Street. With so many options, your possibilities are endless!

Whether you're captivated by historic landmarks or seeking inspirational stories, FABC offers a profound connection to America's past.

First African Baptist Church: Fun Facts & Cool Features

One fascinating feature is the church's role in the Underground Railroad. When you visit, you will witness the air holes drilled into the basement floorboards. While the holes were a Congolese Cosmogram (an African prayer symbol), they provided air to the escapees hiding under the subfloor. These visual reminders will stir your imagination to the bravery and sacrifices of these people.

The craftsmanship throughout the church is equally remarkable. The hand-hewn pews stand as lasting evidence of the work done by these enslaved congregates. Equally impressive are the African tribal markings, which offer a glimpse into their rich heritage.

The stained glass windows add another layer of beauty and depth to the church. Each window honors church leaders and tells Biblical stories that helped illiterate worshipers connect with spiritual teachings.

The pipe organ offers another insight into the story of this church. Initially, it was commissioned in 1834 by St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, which in turn passed it on to St. Joseph Catholic Church, the local African American Catholic church. They, in turn, gave it to the First African Baptist Church around 1888.

After working up an appetite touring FABC, you're only steps away from a delicious meal. The Pirate's House is a few blocks away and occupies the oldest building in Savannah. The Six Pence Pub is a British-style ale house located just a few blocks away.

Visiting First African Baptist Church combines faith, culture, and history, making it a worthwhile attraction on your Savannah vacation.
