About

The Castillo de San Marcos was built by the Spaniards in the 1600s in order to protect their claim on Florida and the Atlantic trade route. Today, Castillo de San Marcos is a National monument and popular tourist attraction in St. Augustine. As you explore this fortress, you will be overwhelmed by the history of the oldest city in the U.S.

There is a lot to learn in the castle. From the history behind building the fortress to pirate attacks and many wars - the Castillo de San Marcos still stands strong today. Shaped in the form of a star, this fort was critical in protecting the city from all directions.

Coquina Rock

The well-preserved fortress is built out of a very special sedimentary rock called Coquina. This is a rare building material because it takes so long to form as a shell stone rock. Furthermore, it's only found in a few coastal regions in the world! Florida and North Carolina are the only places in the U.S. home to the rock. Back in the day, the Spaniards would transport the rock to their building location and wait 6 months to a year just to use it. That's because they needed to leave it out in the sun to dry out before it was usable.

Your Visit to the Castillo de San Marcos

Additionally, you will even find cannons lining walls of the fortress on the upper level. Sometimes there are even cannon re-enactments. As you walk through other areas, you may see other weapons from that time as well.
