About

Formerly known as the Sun Valley Center for the Arts and Humanities, the Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA) is a treasured spot enriching the Wood River Valley's cultural landscape since its inception in 1971.

SVMoA was founded on the belief that a community's vitality and sustainability require the infusion of arts and culture.

Over the last 50 years, it has evolved into a dynamic contemporary art museum, offering transformative arts and educational experiences.

The Sun Valley Museum of Art's journey began as a modest initiative, with a handful of people presenting classes and events.

Today, it is the oldest arts organization in the Wood River Valley and one of only five institutions in Idaho accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

SVMoA serves as a cultural anchor, bringing together families, visitors, and residents for shared arts experiences. As a non-collecting contemporary art institution, SVMoA can invite artists to explore specific topics or issues, fostering a dynamic and responsive exhibition program.

From its humble beginnings as a facility for fine arts residencies, it has grown into a cultural powerhouse, engaging the community in a dialogue around regional and national issues.

Fun Facts & Cool Features

One standout feature of SVMoA is its outdoor setting, providing a wonderful and relaxing landscape for art appreciation. While the merchandise may be limited, the SVMoA compensates with its friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Surrounded by the Ketchum's picturesque mountains, the museum's exterior becomes integral to the art-viewing experience. Visitors can stroll through well-maintained pathways, connecting nature and art seamlessly.

The staff is known for their passion and knowledge, always ready to engage visitors in insightful conversations about the exhibits. This personal touch adds an extra layer to the overall experience, making guests feel like participants in the artistic dialogue.

The museum's commitment to pushing creative boundaries is evident in its unique exhibitions. One such collection, Sightings, takes visitors on an extraordinary journey into the world of UFO-inspired art. Featuring works from acclaimed artists like Deb Sokolow, Cable Griffith, and the estate of Timothy Wiley, Sightings transforms the museum into a hub of curiosity and wonder. The exhibition taps into Idaho's reputation for having the highest number of reported UFO sightings per capita in the U.S., making it visually compelling and culturally relevant.

Sun Valley Museum of Art's dynamic curative approach ensures that each visit is unique, offering something fresh and exciting for first-time and returning visitors.

Whether captivated by Sun Valley's outdoor ambiance, engaged by the friendly staff, or intrigued by the innovative exhibitions, Sun Valley Museum of Art goes beyond the traditional museum experience. Here, art meets nature, and creativity knows no bounds.
