About

The Coordinates Vineyards is a winery that should be a must-visit if you find yourself on Fredericksburg Main Street in Texas. It’s not a large location, but it is an authentic winery that offers a huge selection of exquisite wines.

I’ve never had anything quite like this before. Most of the grapes they use come from South Africa, which is what makes the biggest difference in their wines.

Austin, the owner, is quite an incredible person. He’s laid back and friendly, willing to share his extensive knowledge with guests who arrive. In fact, he knew everything I asked him about, which was just about every grape from South Africa. He offers a lot of insight into the wines and teaches you quite a bit about the differences between them.

Austin's story is what makes Coordinates Vineyards the amazing place it is and, ultimately, how this local business got its name.

Before opening his winery, he set out to source wines for production in China years ago. And while doing so, he traveled just outside of Stellenbosch to find a sixth-generation family vineyard. During this adventure, he got lost, and while trying to find this location, he ran into a local winemaker.

Knowing that Austin was lost, the winemaker shared, “When you’re this far off the beaten track, you just have to go by the coordinates.”

That’s where the company’s name comes from, and I think the story is pretty great when Austin tells it.

Coordinates Vineyards is owned by brothers Austin and Mahlon Kerr. They’ve traveled the world many times over and brought back some excellent choices to share. It’s their knowledge, though, that is really impressive.

I highly recommend popping into this place. You won’t be disappointed!

Vibe

Located right off Main Street, The Coordinates Vineyards is quite a beautiful building and an elegant place to spend some time.

There’s a fire going most of the time, and you can sit and relax with a glass or two of wine. I really find that this is an excellent choice for those who want to have some downtime with a friend or enjoy some wine on a date.

The tasting room is unique. Interesting fact, it was built in 1880 as a blacksmith shop. The historical building brings with it so much history and character. You can just imagine the blacksmith working.

History aside, it’s a comfortable, quiet place to relax, but you can also bring a group and liven it up. There are several seating areas, some with tables as well as a lovely overstuffed leather sofa that feels like it’s always been there and is well-loved.

Coordinates Vineyards: Menu & Drinks

A visit to Coordinates Vineyards is all about sampling the wine! They do offer cheese and dip with crackers to enjoy with your wine.

I recommend getting the Reserve Pinotage 2020 if you are going to sample something special. It is an excellent blend with so much flavor. They also have a few other must-try options like the Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blac, both of which are rich in flavor.

Even better, just ask for some help. I find this to be the best way to choose something based on what your flavor profile tastes are and what your overall interests are. You’ll learn something about each one of the wines you choose.
