About

Hill Country Donuts & Kolaches is very easily a local favorite. It offers all of the typical donut shop goodies and lots more.

One of the best things about this location is the drive-thru, which can make it very difficult to stay away when you are looking for a sweet snack or just want to grab a dozen donuts for breakfast the next morning.

It is a great location for fast and convenient service, and we always get very fresh donuts here.

Kolaches are such a fabulous option for a more filling breakfast or snack. They are made fresh here at Hill Country Donuts & Kolaches in Fredericksburg, Texas, which makes the difference.

These kolaches are made with a yeast-based dough, which needs some time to rise and puff up. Then, they are shaped into a round disc where they have lots of different fillings placed in the center. Some are made with cream cheese, others with fruit fillings.

There’s such a wide range of options available, and they often change, too. They are big, too, about 3 to 4 inches, making them a bigger option (you can share if you think you must!)

This location is staffed with some of the best professionals out there. We love that they are always going the extra mile—like throwing in some extra donut holes because the kids were with us.

And if you’re in a hurry or have a big order, they can also prepare your order in advance (I recommend doing this).

Vibe

The vibe at Hill Country Donuts & Kolaches is very laid back, casual-quick, and kind.

The staff is super friendly, and they definitely know their stuff. Ask them about the ingredients, when the donuts were made, and just about anything else.

I asked what their best-selling donut was and learned it was easily the sprinkle donut, and I can see why.

It’s great to pop in and see what they have in the display cases. There always seems to be something fantastic here that is just coming out of the oven.

Hill Country Donuts & Kolaches: Menu & Drinks

With a wide assortment of often-changing baked goods, there’s always something worth enjoying here (actually, usually a lot of things).

The last time I visited, I enjoyed a cheese kolache and a sprinkled donut along with a cup of coffee. It was absolutely delicious.

Another of my favorites is the sausage jalapeno and cheese kolache. This is a super filling option that is great for breakfast when you know you’ll need the fuel. Also, they do have gluten-free and dairy-free products. Be sure to ask about their vegan and vegetarian options, too.

Everything I have had is always soft, moist, and full of flavor. They use the same recipes year in and year out, and it really shows.

Local Tips

  • They bake throughout the day, so even if you are coming in later, they are still going to have something to offer (though they do sell out!).
  • If you are looking for a quick coffee and donut on the way to school or work, use the drive-thru. It’s better than any of the fast food locations for a yummy breakfast and often faster, too.
  • Though I don’t think they’ll give out recipes, they can tell you what goes into their delicious items. The staff is super friendly and seems to be experts on all things donuts and kolaches.
  • If you have some time to relax, grab a donut and some coffee (or a box of them for friends to share) and then head over to Barons Creek for a walk in the park. You won’t feel so bad about the calorie intake after a nice, long walk.
